The following residents of the ACT draw the attention of the Assembly to the new health levy to support the public health system as introduced in the ACT 2025-2026 budget and outlined on page 10 of the Treasurer's budget speech and page 36 of the 2025-26 Budget Outlook document.
This levy was never mentioned in their recent re-election campaign, nor were the circumstances requiring this levy communicated to the electorate prior to their re-election. It is being imposed for four years on all ACT property owners, regardless of their income. It is an unfair impost on the ACT populace who already pay for health care via the Federal Medicare Levy, Gap payments, and private health insurance.
This Government's Federal counterparts campaigned on a stronger Medicare. Yet our populace is expected to pay an additional $1000 towards the ACT health system over the term of the current ACT government. It is an unfair indiscriminate and additional tax on the good people of this Territory.
Your petitioners, therefore, request the Assembly to call on the ACT Government to immediately repeal this unfair levy on the residents of the Australian Capital Territory and prevent it from being applied during the term of the current government.
