The following residents of the ACT draw the attention of the Assembly to the fact that in September 2025, there was a fire on one of the floating wetlands in Lake Tuggeranong. Several floating panels have been damaged and are now sinking further and further into the lake, creating plastic pollution. Some of the bird netting on the wetlands was also damaged and is floating and sinking in the lake (presumably polyethylene plastic). While this pollution does not cause blue-green algae it is creating plastic pollution in our lake which is potentially hazardous for wildlife, unsightly, as well as possibly entering our water catchment.
Your petitioners, therefore, request the Assembly to call on the ACT Government to, in relation to the floating wetlands in Lake Tuggeranong:
1. inspect and remove the damaged plastics as a matter of urgency (by at least end of February 2026 if not earlier);
2. explain why these assets in the lake are not regularly inspected for damage, and remediated; and
3. outline and implement a regular inspection and remediation plan for the assets in our water quality network.
